The hedge signal
The gap between what you thought the room would say and what it actually said is a tradable number.
gap = poster_predicted_% − room_actual_% gap ≥ +15 → the room is colder on your ticket than you thought. Hedge. gap ≤ −15 → the room is hotter on your ticket than you thought. Ride. |gap| < 15 → the room roughly agrees with your read. No signal.
If you posted a board and predicted 68% of voters would say your ticket cashes, and the reveal comes back at 51%, that's a 17-point gap — the room is not with you. A hedge on the other side turns the board's dispersion into a real instrument, not just an opinion.
- Ticket: Angels +1.5 @ −125, live, end of 3rd, LAA trailing NYY 3–2.
- Poster prediction: 68% of the room will say the ticket cashes.
- Reveal: 51% say cashes. Gap = 68 − 51 = +17.
- Read: the room is nearly a coin flip on your side. The dispersion favors NYY continuing to score.
- Hedge: a live NYY run-line or NYY team total over, sized to cap loss on the +1.5 leg.
- Outcome logic: if LAA covers +1.5 you still book the ticket. If NYY pulls away, the hedge offsets the loss. You bought insurance because the room told you to.
Why 15 points
Below 15 is inside normal sampling noise on a 60-slip floor. At 15+, the room's read and yours are meaningfully different — not a rounding error.
Why this is honest
You committed to your prediction before the reveal. The hedge decision is forced by the gap, not by regret or vibes.
Why not always hedge
Hedging costs juice. When the room clusters with you, hedging is bleeding money against your own edge. The signal exists so you only hedge when the room disagrees.
- Cap max loss, don't chase a middle. The room is telling you variance, not certainty.
- Use live odds, not close odds — the gap is a live signal.
- Never hedge past breakeven on the original ticket unless dispersion (σ) is also high.
- If σ ≥ 20pp AND gap ≥ 15, size the hedge larger — the room is loud AND split.
- Floor not met — under the 60-slip minimum, agreement is lumpy.
- Bot-heavy board — check the reveal for %bot before acting.
- Reveal lands after a game state change (score, injury) the room couldn't see.
- Your original ticket was already a hedge of another position.
